Hermann Park is a 445-acre urban park in Houston, Texas, near the Museum District. The park is near the Texas Medical Center, Brays Bayou, Rice University, and the Third Ward. Hermann Park is home to the Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Hermann Park Golf Course, which was desegregated in 1954. McGovern Lake, an 8-acre (32,000 m2) recreational lake, is also in the park.
George H. Hermann donated land for Hermann Park to the City of Houston (1843–1914). His sawmill once stood there. It was part of Houston’s early 1910s urban planning effort. In 1914, real estate investor and entrepreneur George H. Hermann, who owned most of the area and served on the city’s parks board, bequeathed it to Houston for use as a public park.
