On November 16, 1969, the Museum of Medical Science opened in the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and it remained there for 21 years. The current museum, The Museum of Health & Medical Science, opened on March 16, 1996. The museum’s home, the John P. McGovern Building, was funded through a $9.5 million capital campaign. Over two million visitors have passed through the museum’s doors since its inception. The museum’s board of trustees unanimously voted in late 2001 to rename it after John P. McGovern. As part of its 10th anniversary in the standalone facility, the museum revamped its brand in 2006. [1] The new branding included a new logo and a shortened name (“The Health Museum“). In 2006, the museum had 175,000 visitors per year.
A renovation in 2011 added 3,300 SF of exhibition space to the museum’s southwest side with a metal-panel facade and 1,500 SF of additional interior renovations.
